  • 1st Tone-class heavy cruisers (Total 2, sister ship is Chikuma), named after the Tone River, in the Kantō region of Japan
  • Commissioned: 20 November 1938
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor [7 December 1941] - with Chikuma(筑摩)
  • Battle of the Java Sea [1 March 1942] - Tone, with Chikuma, and destroyers Kasumi and Shiranui sank Dutch freighter Modjokerto
  • Indian Ocean Raids [5 April 1942] - Tone participated in sinking Royal Navy cruisers HMS Cornwall & HMS Dorsetshire.
  • Battle of Midway [4~7 June 1942] - with Chikuma(筑摩)
  • US invasion of Guadalcanal [16 August 1942] - Tone Chikuma were ordered south with the aircraft carriers ShōkakuZuikakuZuihōJun'yōHiyō and Ryūjō. Also joined by battleships HieiKirishima, seaplane tender Chitose, and cruisers AtagoMayaTakaoNagara.
  • Battle of the Eastern Solomons [24 August 1942] - Tone Chikuma participated in damaging USS Enterprise. (Ryūjō was sunk by planes from carrier USS Saratoga)
  • Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands [25~27 October 1942] - Tone Chikuma (with destroyer Teruzuki) participated in sinking carrier USS Hornet and damaged battleship USS South Dakota and cruiser USS San Juan. (two of the four aircraft launched by Tone during the attack were shot down)
  • refit at Maizuru [21 February 1943] - added two twin-mount Type 96 25-mm AA guns & a Type 21 air-search radar. 
  • refit at Kure [6 November 1943] - added more 25-mm AA guns (Total to 20)
  • Battle of the Philippine Sea [13 June 1944]
  • refit at Kure [26 June ~ 8 July 1944] - added more Type 96 25-mm AA (Total to 57). Two new Type 22 surface-search radars and a Type 13 air-search radar were fitted.
  • Battle of Leyte Gulf [23 October 1944] -  Tone along with cruisers KumanoSuzuya and Chikuma, sortied from Brunei towards the Philippines. Cruisers Atago and Maya were sunk, and Takao was damaged.
  • Battle of the Sibuyan Sea [24 October 1944] -  Musashi was sunk and Tone was hit by bombs.
  • Battle off Samar [25 October 1944] - battleships YamatoNagatoHaruna and cruiser Myōkō were damaged. (Tone's sister ship Chikuma & cruisers Chōkai and Suzuya were sunk)
  • dry dock & refit at Maizuru [6 November 1944] - added triple-mount 25-mm AA guns. (Total to 62). The Type 21 radar was replaced with a Type 22.
  • Sinking during the bombing of Kure [24 July 1945] - Nine aircraft from the light carrier USS Monterey hit Tone with three bombs. And was hit again on 28 July by rockets and armor-piercing bombs dropped by planes from USS WaspUSS Bataan and USS Ticonderoga.
