  • M4 Composite - Later variation of M4 which mated a cast front portion to the welded components of the rear hull
  • M4A1 - Continental radial engine; one-piece cast hull75mm cannon.
  • M4A1(76)W - Upgraded with 76 mm M1 gun and large drivers' hatches.
  • M4A2 - Diesel-powered with General Motors Twin G-41 Engine; 75mm cannon. Users: USSR, Britain (Sherman III), France, Poland, US (mainly USMC). Later production units of the M4A2 used the modified 47° glacis with large drivers' hatches. M4A2 performed very well in hot climates, used by USMC in Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO).

  • M4A3E8 "Easy Eight" - Upgraded with widetrack Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS), fitted with the 76mm high velocity cannon.
  • Wet (W) - ammunition stowage was moved to the hull floor, with water jackets surrounding each stowage bin. Wet stowage reduced the chance of fire after a hit to about 15%.
