  • HMS Hermes cooperated with French Navy from October 1939 until the fall of France and the establishment of Vichy France at the end of June 1940.
  • Battle of Dakar (Operation Menace) [September 1940] -  HMS Hermes and cruisers blockade Dakar unsuccessfully by attempted to sink French battleship Richelieu.
  • East African Campaign [February 1941]
  • from the end of 19941, patrolling Indian Ocean
  • Indian Ocean Raid [31 March~10 April 1942] - on 9 Apr 1942, HMS Hermes & HMAS Vampire sailed for Maldives with no aircraft on board, and was attacked by 80 Aichi D3A dive bombers (Val). HMS Hermes & HMAS Vampire was quickly sunk. Most of the survivors were rescued by hospital ship Vita (307 men were lost on Hermes)
