  • The B-17 (mostly B-17F & B-17G) was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets.
  • In Pacific Theater, B-17E conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields. In mid of 1943, B-17 was supplanted by B-24 & B-29.
  • In Battle of the Bismarck Sea on 2 March 1943, six B-17s of the 64th Bomb Squadron sank Kyokusei Maru which carried 1,200 army troops, & damaged 2 others, also shot down Five Zero fighters.

B-17E "Typhoon McGoon II"
B-17E "Typhoon McGoon II" (S/N 41-9211) of 98th Bomb Squadron, 11th Bomb Group, photo was taken in January 1943 in New Caledonia. "Typhoon McGoon II" is the name assigned by this B-17's crew. "Rising Sun Flag" means the number of enemy aircraft were shot down by this aircraft. "Bomb sign" means the number of bombing mission.
