  • P-38J/L "Droopsnoot" / "Pathfinder" - fitted with a Norden bombsight or an H2X radar system, leading a formation of medium and heavy bombers or other P-38s, each loaded with two 2,000 lb (907 kg) bombs; the entire formation releasing their ordinance when the pathfinder did.
  • F-5E - reconnaissance variant converted from the P-38J and P-38L, 705 converted.
