Bf109E-1 - 2 x 7.92 mm MG 17 above the engine + 2 x 7.92 mm MG 17 in the wings. Later, many were modified to the E-3 armament standard. 1,183 E-1 were built.
Bf109E-3 - 2 x 7.92 mm MG 17 above the engine + 2 x 20 mm MG FF cannon in the wings. 1,276 E-3 were built. 83 E-3s were exported.
Bf109E-4 - upgraded to E-4 standards starting at the beginning of the Battle of Britain, using the modified 20 mm MG-FF/M wing cannon (firing new and improved type of explosive shell, called Minengeschoß "mine-shell"). The cockpit canopy was revised to "squared-off" design, easier-to-produce & improve the pilot's field of view. 561 E-4 versions were built.
