- Attack on Pearl Harbor (7 December 1941)
- Indian Ocean raid (March~April 1942) - sank two Royal Navy heavy cruisers (HMS Cornwall & Dorsetshire), & aircraft carrier HMS Hermes, on 9 April 1942)
- Battle of the Coral Sea (4~8 May 1942) - sank the American aircraft carrier USS Lexington, but was seriously damaged by dive bombers from USS Yorktown and Lexington on 8 May 1942.
- Battle of the Eastern Solomons (24~25 August 1942) - damaged USS Enterprise (with her sister-ship Zuikaku & light carrier Zuihō)
- Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands (25~27 October 1942) - sank USS Hornet (with her sister-ship Zuikaku & light carrier Zuihō; Japanese destroyers Makigumo & Akigumo)
- Battle of the Philippine Sea (19 June 1944) - was torpedoed and sunk by a U.S. submarine USS Cavalla.
