  • Lexington-class aircraft carrier [sister ship is USS Lexington (CV-2)]
  • name after Battles of Saratoga (1777)
  • Commissioned: 16 November 1927
  • Guadalcanal Campaign [7 August 1942 ~ 9 February 1943] - its aircraft sank IJN light carrier Ryūjō (龍驤) during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in August 1942
  • Battle of Iwo Jima [19 February ~ 26 March 1945] - she was badly damaged by kamikazeattack and was forced to return to the United States for repairs.
  • Operation Crossroads [1946] - she was sunk by the nuclear weapon tests.
